Yosteo Yoga and Structural Therapy™ (or Yosteotherapy for short), is a curative method of structural therapy developed by Adnan. This method blends two holistic health sciences, Osteopathy and Hatha Yoga, in an intelligent and efficient way. Osteopathy and Yoga have a lot in common and are complementary to conventional medicine. They both share the main principle wherein the body and mind are perceived as an inseparable whole, and, therefore, should always be treated as such.

Osteopathy and Yoga both stimulate the body’s self-healing mechanisms (homeostasis). Osteopathy achieves this through manual therapy techniques and rehabilitation exercises, while Yoga uses postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and meditation. Both holistic sciences complement each other and, when combined, produce a synergistic effect.

One osteopathic principle is that structure and function are inter-dependent; this principle is also used in Yoga. For example, when misalignment of the pelvis is corrected by an appropriate use of asanas, its full function is restored, as is the function of the surrounding structures and organs. Both Osteopathy and Yoga work on improving circulation, thus increasing the oxygen and nutrient intake, as well as getting rid of the toxic waste in the body.

The improvement of the energy circulation is equally important for Osteopathy and Hatha Yoga. A proper use of the Osteopathic Manipulative Techniques (OMT), such as Soft Tissue and Joint Manipulation, Muscle Energy Technique (MET), Positional Release Therapy (PRP), Therapeutic Stretching and Rehabilitation Exercises, followed by carefully designed sequences of Yoga asanas, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques initiates the healing process, and, over time, provides long lasting results.

A therapy session consists of four parts:

  1. History taking (signs and symptoms), postural assessment, identification of musculo-skeletal imbalances and faulty movement patterns, physical examination (palpation, active range of motion, passive range of motion, selection of orthopaedic tests)
  2. Selective OMT (osteopathic manual techniques), depending on the student/client’s condition
  3. Yoga asanas (postures), rehab exercises, breathing techniques (pranayama) and relaxation techniques
  4. Client education: What is going on? Why? How long will it take until I get better? What can I do to help with the healing process?

Although Yosteo Yoga & Structural Therapy™ is designed to treat a vast number of signs and symptoms of neuro-musculo-skeletal problems (patho-physiologies), the main goal, however, is prevention and maintenance of a dynamic equilibrium of the body (homeostasis). Discovering and correcting neuro-musculo-skeletal imbalances before they start causing problems is by far the best therapeutic approach.

A Yosteo Yoga & Structural Therapist™ must possess deep knowledge of:

  • Applied anatomy, physiology and bio-mechanics
  • Signs and symptoms (patho-physiology) of common musculo-skeletal injuries as well as selective number of systemic diseases, such as high or low blood pressure, asthma, digestive problems
  • Therapeutic application of Yoga asanas in various ways (classical postures and modifications, benefits and counter-indications, use of props, restorative yoga, most common breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, rehab exercises)

In summary, Adnan found that a careful combination of particular osteopathic techniques with complementary targeted Yoga movements has profound healing benefits, which far exceed simply using one or the other. This unique approach to treatment has been trademarked in Canada.
